Australia's Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road runs along a small section of the south coast of Australia for about 155 miles, and lies between the towns of Torquay (just West of Melbourne) and Warrnambool.

It was build over a 13 year period, starting in 1919, mainly by soldiers returning from the first Word War (they caled them "diggers").

It runs through some of the most amazing scenary that is a combination of ocean and mountain views.

The most famous view along the road is in the Port Campbell National Park and is called "The Twelve Appostles". So named for the 12 limestone stacks that have been left just of the shore due to erosion. The thing is, and maybe a local can confirm, I don't actually think there is 12 large stacks (maybe one fell down).

You are going to want to drive this road at least twice.

The first time to actually experience the drive and the second to experience the views and all of the places to stop along the way.

In fact, this is one place where you could take a mini-vacation as there is so much do do and see along this route.

Torquay To Warrnambool
Total Miles: 155
Driving Time: 4 Hours 15 Minutes

For example, you could stop at the 12 Apostle Information center (Port Campbell National Park) and experience a helicopter ride to see the limestone formations from the air. The cost is about $145 bucks (AUS) per person and the flights last about 15 minutes or so. I have not done this becuase helicopters are not my thing, but am told it is an incredible ride. There is a link in the resources section so you can find out exactly where to go.

Also, because this section of Australia is to varied, you can chose between going to the beach for some surfing or taking a hike in the rain forest. There is alos plenty of places to stay and eat.
