New Zealand's Southern Alps

OK, we all know about some amazing roads in the Swiss/French/Italian Alps - but what about "down under" in New Zealand's Southern Alps?

Well, just look at the size of the Southern Alps - bigger than the European Alps and the Pyrenees combined - of course there are amazing driving roads! In fact, there are 100's of miles of them - and your could spend weeks exploring this area of the world (and you should if you have the time and money).

But, I had to pick just one so here is the one must-drive road in New Zealand.

Route 6 - Wanaka To Haast Beach
Total Miles: 100
Driving Time: 1 Hours 50 Minutes

Coming out of Wanaka you head north and drive along the shores of Lake Hawea and then the shores of lake Wanaka.

These lakes were gouged out by glacial movement and have left a lagacy for us to just stare in wonder.

Then it is on and into Mt. Aspiring National Park where, if it is your thing, you can stop and hike (not for me, I like horse power) or just stop to take in natures wonder.

Continuing, you will eventually end up in Haast - at the beach!

The roads are narrow and will be slippery when wet - but this drive is well worth the time.

Add to that, the area itself is definately worth the visit. Hiking (no thanks), tramway rides, glaciers, helipcopter rides, fishing, wine tours, train rides and a whole host of other activities can supplement your driving expience. New Zealand is a special place.
