The Best Driving Roads In Spain
Spain has some amazing roads for spirited and scenic driving.
You can drive along a coastal route, through the mountains or through wonderfull, winery laden country-side. Spain has it all.
If you are used to driving in some other, southern, European countries, South America, Mexico or Asia, you will have no problem "fitting" in to the driving style and driver mentality. If you are from the USA, UK, Australia or more northerly Europe you will be in for a treat. The Spanish are known for not observing traffic rules and regulations - so beware and be carefull.
Before we look at some of the roads you will want to drive, let's just do a quick sanity check.
You need to be prepared for your Spanish road-trip so let's take a closer look at some of the rules of the road, traffic laws, and what you need to have with you.
Things To Know When Driving In Spain:-
- Make sure you wear your seatblets at all time or you risk getting a ticket.
- Use of cellphones is prohibited except when using a hands free option - but remember that using an earpiece for your hands free phone is also prohibited (why, I do not know).
- Make sure you always carry your driver's license, insurance documents and ownership/rental documents.
- At roundabouts make sure to give way to vehicles coming from the left.
- Have a fluorescent jacket available for everyone in the car (this is important because of the next point).
- If you get stopped by the police, expect to pay an on the spot fine for whatever transgression you have commited. And, if you get out the car, make sure to put on your fluorescent jacket or your fine will go up!
- Speeding fines are charged based on how much you were going over the speed limit. The rate of fine, at time of writing, is 6 Euro per kilometer over the limit. If you can't pay the fine, and you are a visitor, they will impound your car.
- Freeways/Motorways are called Autopista and designated with a prefix of either A or E. Many Autopista's are toll roads with a speeed limit that will range from 60 to 120km/h.
- Duel carriageways are called Autovias and are never toll roads.
- Main roads are named Carretera Nacional and have roads numbers prefixed with a N or CN.
- Country roads are named Carretera Comarcal and have a C prefix
- Do not park where the sidewalk or pavement is painted yellow - park there and expect to be towed and pay a hefty fine.
